Discover four cycle routes inspired by the course of the Yser, the cross-border coastal river. From east to west, from Oost-Cappel to Saint-Omer, these routes invite you to explore the region following the course of the river…

#01 - THE BANKS OF THE YSER A peaceful route through the heart of Flanders

(29 Km – 3 h 00) Start : HERZEELE – Finish : HERZEELE

Cycle through the Yser valley, as close as possible to the Belgian border. The gentle terrain and moderate distances make this route accessible to occasional cyclists.

This route immerses you in the discreet charm of a rural area, where soothing landscapes mingle with the richness of Flemish architecture. You’ll find two not-to-be-missed Heritage Villages® along the way:

  • In Herzeele, let yourself be seduced by the colourful houses and the famous Café des Orgues, enlivened every weekend by three impressive Mortier organs.
  • In Houtkerque, discover the chapels and oratories, remnants of a history marked by smuggling, still celebrated on Fraudsters’ Night.

#02 - THE BANKS OF THE YSER Between the valleys and the wonders of Flanders

(36 Km – 3 h 30) – Start : WORMHOUT – Finish : WORMHOUT

This route crosses the valleys and small valleys of the Yser and is aimed at experienced cyclists.

Along the way, let yourself be charmed by inland Flanders, with its peaceful landscapes and rich Flemish heritage.

  • In Herzeele, the colourful houses and the Café des Orgues illustrate the local festive spirit.
  • In Wormhout, don’t miss the Grand Place, its bandstandand the Jeanne Devos museum.
  • In Esquelbecq, a Heritage® village, admire the castle, the three-aisled church and the Plaine au Bois site, a place of remembrance of the Second World War.
  • In Zegerscappel, discover a rural heritage marked by work and faith, with breweries, flour mills, chapels and a two-aisled church.

#03 - THE BANKS OF THE YSER Rural charm and hidden treasures

(39 Km – 2 h 45) – Start : BOLLEZEELE – Finish : BOLLEZEELE

Between maritime and inland Flanders, the route follows the old coastal embankment. Despite frequent changes in altitude, the route remains accessible to occasional cyclists. You’ll cycle through the heart of the Yser valley, surrounded by rural heritage and typical landscapes.

Charming villages and Flemish sights punctuate the route:

  • In Volckerinckhove, rural hedgerows, thatched cottages with runic gables, a horse mill and the memory of the Knights Templar create a unique setting. The “Senteurs parc” garden invites you to discover the scents of plants.
  • In Rubrouck, between church, motte castrale and old breweries, the house of Guillaume de Rubrouck plunges you into the world of the Mongol Empire.
  • In Zegerscappel, the old industries and the two-aisled church bear witness to a past marked by work and faith.

#04 - THE BANKS OF THE YSER At the gateway to Audomarois

(27 Km – 2 h 00) – Start : BROXEELE – Finish : BROXEELE

This route takes you through plains, woods, hedged farmland and marshes. Perfect for family outings or beginner cyclists, it crosses the splendid Yser valley.

Along the way, you’ll be charmed by typical villages, Flemish heritage and a generous natural environment:

  • At Nieurlet, discover a unique marshland between Flanders and Artois, where boats glide through the heart of a market garden criss-crossed by canals.
  • At Volckerinckhove, hedgerows, thatched cottages, a horse mill and Templar memorabilia reveal the Flemish soul. Finish on a high note in the “Senteurs parc”, a fragrant garden where the plants tell you a story…
