Land of Carnival You have to experience it to understand it

Carnivals

You can listen to it. You can look at it. But to understand it… you have to live it! You have to live carnival 100%. But before you go, there are a few things you need to know…

LA BANDE DE BERGUES Where conviviality becomes legend

Every year, when winter begins to let go, Bergues is transformed. The town, usually peaceful behind its ramparts, bursts into life with laughter, colour and music. It’s the grand return of the Bergues gang, the colourful procession that marches to the sound of fifes and drums, bringing the whole town with it in a joyous effervescence.

Carnival here is more than just an event: it’s a living tradition, passed down from generation to generation, deeply rooted in the hearts of the local people. Preparations are made months in advance. People come in fancy dress, in disguise, sometimes unrecognisable, but always ready to laugh, sing, and above all… join the gang, as we say here.

Along the cobbled streets, you’ll come across colourful local figures, songs sung at the top of their lungs and sincere hugs. It’s not a carnival of pomp and circumstance: it’s a carnival of bonds, human warmth, light-hearted humour and shared pride.

To experience the Bergues carnival is to understand what it really means to celebrate together. It’s about feeling the heartbeat of an area, of a town that, for one day, becomes a theatre of freedom and fraternity.

LE CLE'TCHEMuch more than a disguise

At carnival, you don’t just parade, you become a carnival-goer. And it all starts with the Clet’che: a unique disguise, cobbled together, colourful, sometimes inherited, but always worn with pride.

Each Clet’che is a reflection of you: a touch of humour, a hint of madness, a nod to tradition. There are no rules: free, quirky, lively, it embodies the spirit of the band.

Prepared well in advance or assembled the day before, it’s a colourful mix of fabrics, zany accessories and misappropriated objects. It’s not just an outfit: it’s a festive statement.

Wearing your Clet’che means saying loud and clear: “I’m here, and I’m living carnival to the full”.

LA CHAPELLESharing and fun!

The “chapel” is not a church, but a house or private premises transformed into a festive stopover. The locals open their doors to the carnival-goers, offering food, drink and human warmth in the heart of the gang.

It’s a place where you can take your clet’che, sing, laugh and toast in a unique atmosphere of local specialities and friendly decor. The chapel is much more than a break: it’s a place for sharing where the soul of the carnival is woven.

LE RIGODONThe Band's finale!

An hour of frenzied heckling, with the Masquelours dancing and singing around the musicians perched on the bandstand.

The rigodon goes into overdrive, the voices unite, and the finale is a tribute to Cô-Pinard, followed by the legendary Cantate à Jean Bart.

A powerful, vibrant moment, full of emotion and tradition.
