Memory trails

Signposted routes in Flanders to understand, remember and share the memory of the Second World War. A big thank you to our partners for their invaluable support in bringing this wonderful project to fruition.

Memory Trails #1 Esquelbecq - Ledringhem - Wormhout

This memorial trail recalls the main events of the Second World War in the Esquelbecq – Wormhout – Ledringhem triangle.

It is fully accessible to cyclists and pedestrians. By car, it requires a few detours, which are indicated by dotted lines on the map. There are three possible starting points.

It can be done in its entirety (19 km) or in 2 loops:

  • Northern loop: Esquelbecq – Wormhout (9 km)
  • Southern loop: Esquelbecq – Ledringhem (10 km)

Memory trails #2 Bergues - Quaëdypre - Socx

This memorial trail recalls the main events of the Second World War in the Bergues – Quaëdypre – Socx triangle. The 14km route forms a loop and must be walked in its entirety to return to the starting point.

It is fully accessible to cyclists and hikers. There are parking spaces, cafés and restaurants along the way.

Memory trails #3 Hondschoote - Rexpoëde - West-Cappel - Warhem

This memorial route recalls the main events of the Second World War in the municipalities of Hondschoote – Rexpoëde – West-Cappel – Warhem.

The cycling route is 36.27km in its entirety and includes an 11.99km route through the town of Hondschoote, which can be walked or cycled.

Memory Trails #4

The aim of this 4th memorial trail is to recall the main events of the Second World War in the communes of Bissezeele, Brouckerque, Crochte, Esquelbecq, Eringhem, Lederzeele, Nieurlet, Pitgam, Saint-Momelin, Steene and Zegerscappel.

The route is divided into two circuits:

  • The 41.13km cycling route passes through 8 towns, starting and finishing at Place Bergerot in Esquelbecq.
  • The pedestrian route, 13.17km in 3 other towns, starting and finishing at Rue de la mairie in Saint-Momelin.

Along the route you’ll find parking spaces, cafés and restaurants.
