Bergues

More than just a film set, with its chiming belfry, narrow streets steeped in history and local gastronomy, Bergues invites you on an unforgettable escapade in the heart of French Flanders.

Bergues A Flemish city with timeless charm

Nestling in the heart of French Flanders, Bergues is a town full of character, combining history, heritage and a gentle way of life. Surrounded by magnificently preserved ramparts, it offers visitors a real journey back in time, between the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and contemporary times.

Its belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still sets the pace for life in the city today, thanks to its carillon of 50 bells. From its heights, the panoramic view of the city and the Flemish plains is breathtaking. Around it, the cobbled streets, yellow brick houses, canals and stone bridges are a reminder that Bergues is indeed a town of Flanders, proud of its roots and traditions.

But Bergues is also a lively and welcoming town. Its museum, ramparts and abbey tell the story of its inhabitants and the religious, military and artistic life of yesteryear. The Monday morning market, one of the oldest in the region, is a great place to meet local producers and sample the flavours of the land.

Made famous by the film“Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis” (Welcome to the Ch’tis), Bergues has managed to capitalise on this reputation while retaining its authenticity. It’s not a set in stone, but a warm, human town, just the right size for a day’s or weekend’s getaway.

Between bucolic walks, cultural discoveries, Flemish gastronomy and northern hospitality, Bergues is a destination not to be missed for those who like to combine heritage with simple pleasures.
