Memory in motion On the trail of a forgotten tragedy

A place of remembrance never to forget. The La Plaine au Bois site pays tribute to a tragic episode of the Second World War: the massacre of British and French soldiers by the Waffen-SS on 28 May 1940.

This remembrance trail takes you from La Plaine au Bois to the Commonwealth War Cemetery, via Esquelbecq Castle, combining peaceful landscapes with moving stories. A walk that is both historical and human, to understand what happened here and why this tragedy left a lasting mark on the region.

The route can be explored on foot or by bike, at your own pace. There are stop-off points along the way, where you can relive the events through eyewitness accounts, archive documents and historical context.

⚠️ This route deals with violent events linked to the war. It is aimed primarily at an adult or informed public.

The Wateringues Nature tamed by man

A landscape shaped by water… and human will. Do you know the Wateringues? This little-known area of northern France is a treasure trove of natural beauty. Between land reclaimed from the sea, peaceful canals and wildlife, set off to discover a landscape that is unique, fragile and shaped by centuries of human ingenuity.

Along a route on the outskirts of Holque, you can trace the history of the reclamation ofthe Flemish coast: an ambitious process in which local people patiently drained the wetlands and harnessed the water to develop agriculture and shape the landscapes we see today.

A journey through nature, history and know-how, this tour invites you to take a fresh look at the landscapes around you. You’ll discover how hydraulic systems work, the role of the wateringues and the ongoing efforts to preserve the balance between land and water.

An open-air walk, ideal for adults curious to understand how man and nature live together… sometimes down to the last millimetre.

Warhem Between discreet charm and living memory

Well-kept secrets… for those who take the time to discover them. At first glance, Warhem appears to be a peaceful, typical Flanders village. But behind its brick facades, quiet lanes and familiar bell towers lie surprising stories, a discreet but rich heritage, and local figures who have left their mark on the area’s history.

This tour takes you deep into the soul of Warhem. From one stage to the next, discover its Flemish identity, its traditions, its emblematic sites and the key figures who have shaped its past.

An open-air heritage walk. Designed to be explored on foot, the tour is perfect for anyone interested in local discoveries and human stories. Whether you’re passionate about history, curious about culture or simply looking for a peaceful stroll, Warhem is sure to surprise and captivate.

Take the time to look up, listen to the stories… and you’ll soon find that Warhem holds no secrets for you.

Guardians of the wind Witnesses to time

Windmills, watermills, pivot mills, oil mills, drainage mills or horse mills… Flanders’ mills are as diverse as they are fascinating. Long essential to daily life and the local economy, they are now living symbols of ancestral know-how and a strong link between man, the land and the elements.

Although some have lost their wings, their silhouettes continue to punctuate the Flemish landscape. Restored, maintained or simply preserved, these mills are much more than mere monuments: they are true witnesses to the rural history, hydraulic ingenuity and agricultural traditions of the region.

This tour takes you on a journey to meet these giants of wood and brick. The trail invites you to locate the mills that are still visible, to understand how they work and their history, and sometimes even to go inside to discover the mechanisms that still make them turn. We advise you to do this tour by car or, for the more courageous, by bike, as the mills are quite far away.

So let yourself be carried away by the wind… and follow the windmill trail!
