Housed in a former 18th-century presbytery, this museum evokes the life and work of Jeanne DEVOS, Flanders' first female professional photographer. This beautiful Flemish house was the residence of the photographer and Abbé LAMPS. Both are buried in the park, where they planted the trees and flowers of Flanders.
Many traditional Flemish objects, collected by the photographer, are on display. The furniture, tapestries, tiles, decorations and paintings are those of the homes of yesteryear, and the many objects that have remained in their place tell you about the daily lives of our forebears.
The photographic collection, comprising some 100,000 photos taken between 1952 and 1979, is preserved and on display at the Wormhout media library's iconographic center. You can consult numerous photo albums of portraits, various ceremonies, innumerable views of villages and scenes of life, testifying to Jeanne DEVOS? attachment to Flanders and its inhabitants. You'll also discover old cameras and, above all, the rare stereoscopic photographs with their striking relief.
"Nobody ever came here for five minutes", said Jeanne DEVOS. Nobody ever came here for five minutes", said Jeanne DEVOS. So make sure you take your time to appreciate the charm of this house and its janitor, who welcomes you in Flemish or French.
