Land of towns and villages Hondschoote

Hondschoote

In the heart of Flanders, Hondschoote reveals its authenticity: emblematic mills, renaissance heritage and generous nature invite you on a timeless journey.

Land of Flanders Flemish escape

Welcome to Hondschoote, a small corner of Flanders with all the makings of a large town: a lively, colourful central square, superb Flemish buildings with unique architecture and a warm, gentle way of life. As soon as you step into the city, you’ll be enveloped in a peaceful atmosphere where time seems to stand still.

Admire the elegant Renaissance town hall overlooking the Grand-Place. Inside, the municipal museum opens its doors for a journey into the past, with tapestries, paintings and rare objects that tell the story of the area’s rich history.

But Hondschoote is also a town of mills. The Noordmeulen, one of the oldest in Europe, is a picturesque sight, while the Spinnewyn, a wooden sentinel erected after the battle of 1793, keeps watch over the surrounding plains.

Along the way, you’ll be amazed by the bluish flax fields, the hidden chapels and the little paths that wind through the countryside. On foot or by bike during the Flax Route or the Rallye Bleu, every stroll becomes an enchanted interlude between nature and heritage.

And because here we cultivate a warm welcome as much as tradition, take the time to sit down and taste the local flavours in a simple, friendly atmosphere.

Whether you’re curious, a lover of history or in search of authenticity, Hondschoote promises you a great Flemish escape.

Land of HeritageSpinnewyn Mill

Erected in 1993, the SPINNEWYN mill, known as the Moulin de la Victoire, pays tribute to the gendarmes who bravely defended Hondschoote in 1793. It was at the foot of this mill that a foreign invasion was halted, saving the young Republic. Rebuilt for the bicentenary, it is still in use for local festivals. A place steeped in history not to be missed! For bookings.
