Hôtel de ville, 1 bis place Général De Gaulle, 59122 Hondschoote

Description

Built in the 16th century (1558, date visible in the middle of the cornice) of sandstone and white stone, the Hôtel de Ville features elements from the Gothic and Renaissance eras. The imposing facade is a real eye-catcher, with its sparrow-stepped gables and the coats of arms of families who have marked the town's history. Inside, the former courtroom is decorated with panels recounting the town?s history. In the town council chamber, you'll find a painting of the Battle of Hondschoote (1793), donated to the town in 1852 by Alphonse de Lamartine, then Deputy, as well as a portrait of Baron Coppens, husband of Marie Bart, niece of the famous Dunkirk privateer Jean Bart. On the second floor, a small museum houses several paintings from the church, as well as a series of Neufs Preuses. Unlike the façade, the rear of the Hôtel de Ville is made of brick. The illusion of bottles in places is due to the presence of the Bruges arch. This rear section also features a tower and a bulbous bell tower covered in slate. Information and tours by prior arrangement with Terre de Flandre Tourisme.
